Are functional ovarian cysts normal? The answer is a qualified “yes”. In fact, many women have functional cysts and do not even know it.

However, if something is not quite right, the symptoms can be painful and potentially dangerous.

If you have suffered from a functional cyst, you may have experienced one of two different types:

A follicular cyst: develops when the sac on the ovary does not release the egg. Instead, the sac fills with fluid

A luteal cyst: develops after the egg is released from the sac on the ovary. But, it reseals and still fills with fluid

In both cases, a functional cyst will often resolve itself over time and you will be none the wiser. But, if the sac continues to get larger and fill with an excessive amount of fluid, it can cause you to have severe abdominal pain, accompanied with nausea and vomiting. You do not want to go there.

In the worst case scenario, if the functional cyst ruptures, it can cause pain during intimate moments or irregular bleeding. Then, it is important to see your doctor, because the bleeding can be significant and cause further health concerns.

So, what can you do to prevent recurring functional cysts that have the potential to make your life miserable? You can:

Take birth control pills: which stop your periods, interrupt the reproductive cycle, and should prevent the cysts from forming. Unfortunately, it does not always work; plus, if you want a baby, hormone therapy is definitely not the answer.

Surgery: should be a last resort. Surgery is painful. It may remove a cyst today, but it cannot prevent another from taking its place in the future. In addition, the invasive procedure can cause scarring, which could adversely affect the ability to get pregnant.

Holistic approach: is the first option many women choose. It will not decrease your current chances of conceiving or in the future. Also, it is much preferred to expensive and invasive surgery that has the potential to render you infertile. Instead, many women can testify to the disappearance of their cysts within 2 months; and continued holistic therapy prevents the painful fluid-filled sacs from coming back.

So, the choice is up to you. But, when considering your options, remember the first two approaches cannot guarantee functional cysts will not be a part of your future; and, your ability to have children may be compromised. However, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain from the holistic approach to ridding your body of functional ovarian cysts for good.
